In a landmark step towards transforming the way drivers traverse along Interstate 17 in Arizona, a unique “flex lanes” system is being constructed as part of the I-17 Improvement Project. This first-of-its-kind system is designed to improve safety, manage traffic congestion, and enhance overall driving experience over a challenging 23-mile stretch of highway from Anthem Way to Sunset Point.
Over the past year, motorists driving north of Phoenix would have noticed significant changes, with crews working to widen this highway corridor. However, it’s the approximately 8-mile span between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point that will receive the most noticeable upgrade: the introduction of flex lanes.
To help Arizona’s motorists understand this novel approach, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has launched a new animated video showcasing the flex lane’s operations. The video is available on a dedicated webpage loaded with in-depth information and resources on this pioneering system.
Annette Riley, ADOT’s project manager for the I-17 Improvement Project, remarks, “The flex lanes are an innovative solution that increases safety and helps address congestion in a very challenging geographic area.”
What are Flex Lanes? A Deeper Dive
The two-lane flex lane system is built adjacent to the existing southbound lanes, designed to handle one direction of traffic at a time, based on demand. They will primarily cater to northbound traffic from Monday through Saturday and southbound traffic on Sunday. However, their flexible nature allows them to adapt to traffic needs, opening to whichever direction experiences the heaviest traffic.
The animated video illustrates how vehicles will use new crossover lanes to safely access the flex lanes, which will be separated from the current southbound lanes by a concrete barrier. Emergency situations are also addressed, with steel gates installed in the barrier at four locations to clear traffic out of the flex lanes if needed.
Flex Lane Management: A Glimpse into the Future
ADOT’s Traffic Operations Center will remotely manage and monitor the flex lanes using strategically placed cameras throughout the corridor. Dynamic overhead guide signs will alert drivers about the open direction of the flex lanes, ensuring smooth transitions and minimizing confusion.
Several safety measures have been incorporated to prevent vehicles from mistakenly entering the flex lanes against the flow of traffic. An automated net barrier and swing gate system, located at both ends of the flex lanes, will control access. When one direction of the flex lanes is closed, a series of progressively widening swing gates will block entry. Beyond these gates, a vehicle-arresting barrier, equipped with a net, will provide an additional layer of safety.
This innovative flex lanes system, combined with state-of-the-art safety measures and remote management, sets a new standard for highway travel. ADOT’s animated video and dedicated webpage demystify this new system, helping Arizona’s motorists embrace the future of commuting on I-17. The project is expected to reach completion in 2025, marking a significant milestone in Arizona’s transport infrastructure.
