Rotary Club of Sedona Village gathered once again this year to clean up our local treasure Oak Creek. Oak Creek Watershed Council was there with us as usual and provided all of the needed equipment and advice on how to clean up the creek best. Last year, OCWC partnered with the Forest Service and had a dog poop receptacle put in place down near Red Rock Crossing, and we saw the effect in less poop being picked up by our volunteers this year. Every year we pick up less and less garbage which is truly wonderful! It seems the public is treating the creek with more awareness each year.
Here are this year’s totals:
- Recyclables (plastic and aluminum): 1 pound
- Glass: 2.28 pounds
- Feces and diapers: 2.12 pounds
- Trash: 23.15
- Total: 28.55 pounds
To our surprise, we also found a Porta-Potty in a flood plain along the creek! Estimated at 35-40 lbs. Because volunteers flagged it and we can work with USFS to remove it, there will be much less fecal matter sitting next to the creek, with the potential of it washing back into the creek during future flooding events.
We all think it’s fantastic to see that we’ve removed much less waste in the area over the years!
